Redmond, Ruth Marian (née White)

Died January 13th, 2016 at Arbour Heights in Kingston, aged 96. She was married for 66 years to Donald A. Redmond, who died in 2014, and joins him in another life along with her parents, Bertha and Frank White, and her four brothers, John, Ves, Ed and Bert. Survived and lovingly remembered by sons Christopher (Susan) and Derek (Roseanna), daughter Margi McKay (Rod), grandchildren Chris Draper (Suzie), Amelia Redmond, Anna McDonald, Lindy McDonald, Maddi McKay (Noel), Bethany McKay (Mikael), Rory McKay, and two great-grandchildren.

An active member of Sydenham Street United Church for fifty years, she was a woman of deep faith. Unusually in her generation, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Teaching Certificate and then a graduate degree, Bachelor of Library Science, from McGill University. She worked only briefly as a librarian, but was a lifelong lover of books, promoting literacy with Helen Tufts Nursery School and teaching ESL. She built a massive collection of historic and current cookbooks that has now been acquired by the University of Guelph Library and Queen's University.

As the mother of three small children, she twice took them half way around the world, as Donald's career led him to international development projects in Sri Lanka and then Turkey, to Lawrence, Kansas and finally, in 1966, to Kingston. Along the way Ruth was an avid learner, interested in cultures and people, developing new skills in the kitchen and the sewing-room, and delighting in her children and later grandchildren. Wherever she was, she found opportunities for church work and volunteer service, including running the Meals on Wheels program in Kingston.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit at the ROBERT J. REID & SONS FUNERAL HOME ‘The Chapel on the Corner’ 309 Johnson Street (at Barrie St.) on Friday, January 22nd from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at SYDENHAM STREET UNITED CHURCH, 82 Sydenham Street, Kingston, on Saturday, January 23rd at 11a.m., Memorial donations may be directed to Helen Tufts Nursery School, Covenant House, or the Mission and Service Fund, United Church of Canada
