Hartel, Peter Hartel

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden and unexpected death of Peter Hartel, whose life ended on October 9th, 2014, while traveling in Nevada.

A powerful force was extinguished that day. Peter was blessed with an abundance of natural gifts, and he used those each day to extract every available drop of meaning, stimulation, and learning from his life.

An accomplished athlete, musician, artist and cook, Peter made the most challenging tasks look effortless. He was an enthusiastic teacher, and lived with his gaze directed forward, hungry for the next challenge. Those who had the good fortune to know him were constantly inspired by his insatiable curiosity. Despite the brevity of his life, he left nothing undone.

Peter was a devoted husband to his wife Janet. During their 31 years of marriage, they shared innumerable adventures, the most important of which was the raising of their beautiful children. He was an engaged, loving, attentive and empowering father to Andrew and Meg. His eyes were never brighter than when telling stories of their growth and accomplishments. A prouder father could not exist.

Peter was pre-deceased by his mother Jensine. He is survived by his father Erwin Hartel and three loving sisters, Katherine Hartel (Rae), Christine Webb (Steve) and Ena Gaudet (Michael). He leaves many adoring nieces and nephews.

His loss is devastating to so many, but we are richer for having known him.

A Celebration of Peter’s Life will be held at The Grand Theatre, 218 Princess Street, Kingston on Friday, October 17th at 5:30 with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation or the Community Foundation for Kingston & Area.
