MCMENAMIN, Patrick Arthur 1941 - 2016. Died peacefully in his 75th year on Friday, July 29nd, 2016 surrounded by his family in Kingston ON. Beloved husband for 50 years of Mary K McMenamin (nee Nugent). Loving father to Terri, Mary Jo (Rupert) and Scott. Adored grandfather of Poppy, Zoe, Disa and Lila. Uncle to Patrick and Sean. Predeceased by brother Edward (Louise) and parents James and Mary Ethel McMenamin.

Pat was born in Ottawa March 30th 1941. He grew up in Toronto where he attended school at De La Salle College before a final year of high school in Sudbury.

Pat received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Saint Francis Xavier University, a Bachelor of Physical Education degree from University of Waterloo, and a Masters of Science from Springfield College. After leaving Springfield, he began teaching Physical Education at Frontenac Secondary School and remained there until his retirement 32 years later.

Pat was an athlete. His natural athletic ability, leadership and ease with people were the foundation for a lifetime of individual and team excellence. He leaves a lasting legacy of thousand’s of lives touched as teacher, coach, volunteer, and referee in sport. In 1999, the Kiwanis Club of Kingston awarded Pat with their Sports Builder Award, and the Limestone District School Board presented him with the Outstanding Service Award.

Pat loved and excelled at all sport. In high school it was hockey. He was the Sudbury Wolves Juvenile MVP 1958-59. In softball he was the Remax Team MVP in 1982. In golf he scored a Hole-in-one on the 2nd Hole at the Cataraqui Golf and Country Club.

His biggest passion was football. In 1963 he was part of the X-Men Atlantic Bowl Champions, and in 1965 he was named to the All Canadian Team in recognition for being the best Defensive Back in the country. Coach McMenamin lead the Frontenac Falcons for almost three decades and took them to the finals often. He was the head coach for Frontenac’s first ever County Championship. He was a member of the Queen’s Golden Gaels coaching staff for 17 years, including the Vanier Cup winning year 2009.

While at Saint Francis Xavier, Pat met Mary Nugent and in 1966 he married her joining the Nugent family from Bath, New Brunswick. Pat fast became a favorite with the family, at Grand Lake and at family reunions. His extended Nugent family now has just over one hundred members.

Known as Paddy to his grandchildren, he spent hours of loving time, showing them how to garden, fish, throw a football, or search for seashells in Florida. He passed on his love of sport to three children Terri, Mary Jo and Scott. All three can throw a perfect spiral. Paddy loved surprises. You’d often find treats hidden somewhere after he left, a moved lawn, tank of gas, or a washed window.

A Toronto Maples Leafs fan, Pat would joke that they were a trade away from a parade down Young Street, often with a wink and smile.

Pat has great friends — a bunch of tricksters. They spent years teaching, coaching, hunting, golfing, and going for coffee together. He was a loyal friend, quick to forgive and always counted on to be there. Pat was a longtime member of the Cataraqui Golf and Country Club where he and his friends spent many happy hours and days golfing together.

Happy journey Paddy!

“May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.”

We’ll see you again.

Visitation will be held at the ROBERT J REID & SONS "THE CHAPEL ON THE CORNER" , 309 Johnson Street, Kingston, on Wednesday, August 3rd from
5 pm - 9 pm.
