Rowlands, Margaret Mary (1917-2016 )
“Margaret Barton”

Died peacefully on Thursday, February 25th, 2016 in her 99th year. Wife of the late Professor Stanley Rowlands (2006). She leaves two children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who were very much part of her life. Margaret was a remarkable person, who did not follow the life expected of women of her generation. She had a difficult and disrupted childhood. Her father was killed in the First World War and her mother died during Margaret’s teenage years. After university in Liverpool she became a professional actress, but only briefly, because she decided to serve her country in the United Kingdom’s Air Force during the Second World War. Once her children had passed their early childhood years she taught at a girls’ grammar school in North London and continued her interest in drama by producing the school plays. When she and her husband moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1968, she resumed professional acting and appeared in many productions put on by Theatre Calgary and other companies across Canada, until she was in her eighties.

Throughout her life she maintained her strong faith in God and was a devout Roman Catholic. A Mass will be said for the repose of her soul, according to her wishes, in May 2016. Cremation arrangements in care of the Robert J. Reid & Sons Funeral Home in Kingston, Ontario. As expressions of sympathy donations in memory of Margaret to Heart and Stroke Foundation, CUSO, CNIB or Amnesty International would be appreciated by the family.
