<div itemprop="description">Donald A. Redmond, librarian and polymath, died at Kingston General Hospital October 22, 2014, aged 92. He served as Chief Librarian of Queen's University 1966-1977, and was active in Kingston's Sydenham Street United Church, the Kingston Historical Society, and many other causes and activities. <br /> <br />Don Redmond was born May 19, 1922, in Owosso, Michigan, and grew up in Nova Scotia. He earned degrees from Mount Allison University, McGill University, and the University of Illinois, and began a career in technical librarianship that included positions in Nova Scotia, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Turkey and Kansas before he came to Queen's. His interests ranged from Meccano, railways and steam machinery to church history and the study of Sherlock Holmes (about which he wrote two scholarly books). He was a Member of the Chemical Institute of Canada and a Baker Street Irregular, as well as a loving husband, generous father and indulgent grandfather. <br /> <br />He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth (White), who is a resident of Arbour Heights in Kingston; children Christopher Redmond (Susan), Derek Redmond (Roseanna), and Margi McKay (Rod); seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Sydenham Street United Church on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at 2 pm. Memorial donations may be made to the United Church of Canada, Mission and Service Fund - Education. Arrangements entrusted to Robert J. Reid &amp; Sons Funeral Home. <br /></div>
